CLASSIBOND LATEX KEYCOAT™ is a Styrene-Acrylic copolymer emulsion with exceptionally good flexibility, developed for use with Portland cement. A high-performance acrylic-based bonding primer designed to promote adhesion between dense or low-porosity substrates and subsequent cementitious coatings, adhesives, screeds, and tile adhesives. It incorporates fine graded aggregates for mechanical keying and enhanced interlayer bonding.
USESA Waterproofing and Keying aid ADDITIVE.
A Keying agent for priming previously painted and gypsum plastered surface.
Suitable Primer / Key Kote for application onto smooth dense substrates such as power floated floors, tile onto tile, and smooth plastered walls.
An additive for strengthening and waterproofing concentrate and mortar.
Primer for tiling over glazed ceramic tiles, painted surfaces, or smooth concrete.
Bonding coat for plaster or screed over old tiles or sealed surfaces.
Suitable for both interior and exterior applications.
Ideal for refurbishment projects and new installations Level of Usage: 50% based on weight of cement; more may be required for improved adhesion on thin screeds. CLASSIBOND LATEX KEYCOAT™ can be used with Portland, High Alumina and fast setting cements. To counteract darkening of modified cement, white cement may be added.
KEY FEATURES AND BENEFITSClassibond™ Latex Keycoat is non-toxic, non-corrosive, and user-friendly. It is applied using standard mortar preparation methods—simply replace part of the mixing water with Classibond™ Latex Keycoat. Add a small amount of clean water only if the mix is too thick.
Suitable for Interior and Exterior Applications
Enhances Mortar Strength — Produces a high-strength, shock-resistant bond
Water-Resistant — Increases durability in wet areas
Excellent Compatibility — Works seamlessly with ordinary Portland cement
Performs Well at Low Temperatures
Improves Flexibility and Tensile Strength
Resistant to Alkaline Conditions
Weather Resistant — Ideal for outdoor use
Reduces Shrinkage in Tile Grouts
Improves Grout Resistance — Enhances resistance to urine, dilute chemicals, sugar solutions, and lactic acid
Versatile Patching Applications — Suitable for horizontal (floors), vertical, and overhead repairs
Perfect for Both New Construction and Repair Work
Paintable Surface — Once cured, can be painted over without issue
Classibond™ Latex Keycoat does not alter the setting time of standard Portland cement, maintaining predictable working conditions on site. APPLICATIONS
Primer for tiling over glazed ceramic tiles, painted surfaces, or smooth concrete.
Bonding coat for plaster or screed over old tiles or sealed surfaces.
Suitable for both interior and exterior applications.
Ideal for refurbishment projects and new installations.
New floors and walls must be left to cure for the following periods to ensure the tiling application is not compromised:
| Substrate | Notes | Curing Time |
|---|---|---|
| New Concrete | Allow full hydration | 6 weeks |
| New Screeds | Ensure low moisture | 4 weeks |
| New Brickwork | Fully bonded joints | 4 weeks |
| New Render | Protect from rain | 2 weeks |
The surface must be firm, dry, and free from dust, loose particles, oil, grease, mould, wax, polish, or any organic growth.
Organic growth must be completely removed, and spores killed using Classic Fungicide.
PVA-painted and gypsum-plastered surfaces must be mechanically roughened to remove at least 80% of the existing layer.
Enamel-painted or bitumen-coated surfaces must be 100% stripped by scraping, then chipped to expose at least 80% of the original substrate.
Existing tiles must be sound and firmly bonded. Clean with a mild acid solution, rinse thoroughly with clean cold water, and allow to dry completely before tiling.
Wooden floors or walls must be securely braced to eliminate any movement or deflection prior to tiling.
Smooth off-shutter concrete or power-floated surfaces must be cleaned with a mild acid wash to remove surface laitance. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and allow to dry fully before application.
The recommended mix ratio is 1-part CLASSIBOND LATEX KEYCOAT™ to 2 parts tile adhesive powder by volume (e.g., 10 litres of CLASSIBOND LATEX KEYCOAT™ per 20 kg of tile adhesive).
Measure the required amount of CLASSIBOND LATEX KEYCOAT™ into a clean mixing bucket.
Using a suitable mechanical mixer, gradually add the tile adhesive powder while continuously mixing.
Mix thoroughly until a smooth, lump-free, viscous consistency is achieved.
Allow the mixture to stand for 3 to 5 minutes, then stir briefly before use.
The prepared mixture should be used within 60 minutes of mixing.
Stir well before use. Do not dilute.
Apply evenly with a brush, roller, or block brush.
Allow CLASSIBOND LATEX KEYCOAT™ to dry until tack-free (approx. 1–2 hours).
Apply tile adhesive, plaster, or screed within 24 hours for optimal adhesion.
Avoid contamination once dry.
All surfaces should be structurally sound, clean and free of all dirt, oil, grease, paint, concrete sealers or curing compounds.
Stir well before use. Do not dilute.
Apply evenly with a brush, roller, or block brush.
Allow Classibond to dry until tack-free (approx. 1–2 hours).
Apply tile adhesive, plaster, or screed within 24 hours for optimal adhesion.

The recommended mix ratio is 1-part CLASSIBOND LATEX KEYCOAT™ to 2 parts tile adhesive powder by volume (e.g., 10 litres of CLASSIBOND LATEX KEYCOAT™ per 20 kg of tile adhesive).
Neat Classibond™ Latex Keycoat: approximately 4 m² per litre when applied as a primer.
Mixed with Tile Adhesive (10L Classibond™ + 20kg tile adhesive): Will cover approximately 35–40 m² under standard conditions.
⚠️ Note: These figures are intended as a guideline for estimating material requirements. Actual coverage may vary depending on surface condition, porosity, site conditions, and application technique.
IMPORTANTThe usage and storage ambient temperature must be between 5ºC and 35ºC and humidity between 10% and 85%.
Avoid applying under adverse weather conditions as this could result in poor product performance.
Tools and implements used for mixing and applying CLASSIBOND LATEX KEYCOAT™ modified cement mixes must be cleaned with soapy water after use.

If accidental contact with skin, wash immediately with soap and water or a good quality skin cleaner.
If accidental contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.
Do not let a freshly painted room be occupied, particularly not by older people, children, or pets.
Wear a respirator if the area being painted cannot be adequately ventilated, and work for short periods only.
Ventilate the area to be painted, opening all doors and windows and using fans during application and drying.
Protect floors with cloth drop cloths, not plastic, which is far more slippery.
Do not paint or store paint near any heat source such as a water heater or fireplace and never smoke while painting.
Make sure your ladder is in good shape. Set the legs on an even surface and lock the cross braces. Do not stand on the top of the ladder or on the utility shelf. If you are having difficulty reaching a spot, get down from the ladder and move it rather than leaning out.
Clean up carefully and thoroughly when you are done for the day.
If rags have alkyd paint or thinner on them, leave them to dry outside to avoid any chance of spontaneous combustion.
Choose an area inaccessible to children and pets, and when they are thoroughly dry, take them to a toxic-waste dump site.
Different surfaces and environmental conditions require specific painting systems to produce the best possible results - It is, therefore, recommended that you contact a representative from Classic Paints for advice on all your painting requirements, whenever possible.
